6. Post-Resurrection Miracles (A.D. 33)
The time after the resurrection of Jesus Christ represents a pivotal and transformative chapter in Christian history. This period not only validated His resurrection but also inspired hope and strengthened belief among His followers, reinforcing their comprehension of His divine essence and the assurance of eternal life. Three key post-resurrection appearances of Jesus are especially noteworthy: His interaction with Mary Magdalene, His meeting with the disciples on the Road to Emmaus, and His manifestation to the disciples in Jerusalem.
30. Appearance to Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18): The first miracle occurs when Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene. This meeting has special poignancy because of the close relationship between Jesus and Mary as one of His most faithful disciples. After Jesus was crucified, Mary visited His tomb early in the morning and found it empty (John 20:11-18). Overcome with grief and confusion, she stood wailing outside the tomb, asking where they had taken Jesus. Then, in a profoundly meaningful moment, Jesus said her name, “Mary.” This simple yet profound act brought her back to life and awareness—it was her Teacher, alive! It was Mary Magdalene who first saw the resurrection, a position of incredible importance, as Mary was tasked with telling the others the news. This moment captures the heart of resurrection: the shift from sorrow to joy, despair to hope, and death to life.

32. Appearance to Disciples in Jerusalem (Luke 24:36-49): A significant moment was when Jesus revealed Himself to His disciples in Jerusalem. This occurred immediately after the meeting on the road to Emmaus and reflected how quickly the news of His resurrection spread. As the Gospel of Luke notes, ‘[36] While they were still speaking these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” [37] They were frightened and amazed and thought they saw a spirit. [38] But he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? [39] See my hands and my feet; it is I myself. Feel and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.” Christ’s presence among the disciples gave them great peace, and He ate broiled fish. Yet, they still showed signs of fear and doubt. And again, as in the case of Mary, Jesus allowed someone to see His marks. He also encouraged them to touch His hands and feet and let them feel Him. Now, the doubt that had been troubling them from the beginning was dispelled. This helped them reaffirm their faith. In fact, that was why they had come together.

31. Appearance to Disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35): The second notable appearance occurred on the journey to Emmaus, as recounted in the Gospel of Luke (24:13-35). On that day, two disciples were on their way to Emmaus, burdened with sorrow and disappointment in the aftermath of the crucifixion and the reports of an empty tomb. While they walked, they conversed about the recent events, unaware that Jesus was accompanying them. At first, they did not recognize Him. Through a thoughtful exchange of questions, Jesus gradually began to illuminate the Scriptures concerning His suffering and resurrection. They found themselves engrossed in His words, which rekindled a sense of hope within them. It was only when they arrived in Emmaus and broke bread together that their eyes were opened, allowing them to recognize Him. This moment holds profound significance; it underscores the value of community, the act of communion, and how faith can emerge in unforeseen circumstances. Upon realizing His identity, the disciples hurried back to Jerusalem to proclaim the astonishing news of the risen Christ, exemplifying the transformative effect of their encounter with Jesus.
