The Cultural Christian: Elon Musk: A Look into the Depths of Belief
Elon Musk revealed that he is a "cultural Christian" in an interesting conversation with Jordan Peterson. He also emphasized that he believes Jesus' lessons are "good and wise." What does this really mean for Musk, though? Basically, it's about following the moral and ethical rules of Christianity without fully committing to faith or doing religious practices. He thinks that Jesus' teachings will make everyone happy, not just now but for many years to come. For example, the idea of "turning the other cheek" strikes a chord with him.
Reflecting on his faith, Musk candidly admits, “I’m not particularly religious, but I think Jesus’s teachings are beneficial. So, I’d say I’m probably a cultural Christian.” Interestingly, this term is gaining traction as even noted atheist Richard Dawkins identifies with it.
So, what does Musk think about the idea of God? In an interview with actor Rainn Wilson in 2013, said that he was an atheist and was skeptical about the idea of an all-knowing god watching every action people take. He believed in evolution and thought that people were the result of complicated processes that started with simpler things.
In the year 2022, Musk talked about how much he admired the "god of Spinoza," a philosopher who didn't believe in a personal God and instead said that God and nature are connected.
Musk's search for meaning didn't end there. In a deep conversation with journalist Tucker Carlson on October 7, 2024, he admitted that there might be a maker. "We must have come from somewhere," he said, implying that we are here because of some force or being. He didn't say much about the creator, though; he just called it a puzzle that was worth exploring.
Musk discussed the idea of endless happiness after death in an interesting interview with the Babylon Bee crew, but he did not say for sure if he sees Christ as his Savior.
His parents were very religious and baptized him in the Anglican Church. This is where his spiritual path began. Still, when he was a teenager, he had to deal with deep philosophical questions. He went through a rough patch of depression and a lot of heavy thought because he was bullied at school and had a tense relationship with his father.
Musk read many holy books, such as the Bible and the Quran, in his search for meaning, but they didn't give him what he was looking for. He also read some famous philosophers' works, like those by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, but he concluded that their ideas might even be bad for young philosophers.
In a strange way, the silly science fiction classic The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy made him love life again. Musk learned the wise saying, "Asking the right questions is much more important than rushing to find answers." If you ask the right questions, the solutions will come naturally.
Musk is now a cultural Christian, but he is still interested in the idea of a creative force behind existence. He is always ready to explore the mysteries of faith and meaning.
